Application Characteristics of Wax Powder in Powder Coatings
In the use of powder coatings, whether for matting or improving coating performance, wax is the first solution that comes to mind. However, different types of waxes play vastly different roles in powder coatings. So, what aspects should we consider when making a selection?
1. Degassing Property: Since the surface of powder-coated substrates contains small molecular substances—especially porous substrates such as cast iron, cast aluminum, and zinc-based substrates—the wax needs to address coating defects caused by these substrates, such as pores, bubbles, and depressions.
2. Improving Leveling: Amino-modified waxes, being of the same type as those used in powder coatings, provide better wetting when coating fillers and pigments, thereby improving surface leveling.
3. Enhancing Powder Smoothness: Wax powder can increase the smoothness of the powder and enhance the storage stability of the coating. For formulations containing certain wax varieties, excessive odor and smoke during baking are harmful to environmental protection and safety; thus, it is advisable to select non-smoking waxes.

4. Controlling Gloss: During baking, wax floats to the surface of the coating film, forming a fog-like layer, thereby reducing gloss.
5. Wear and Scratch Resistance: Wax distributes on the coating surface to protect the film, prevent scratches and abrasions, and provide wear resistance.
6.Anti-Fingerprint: Adding a certain amount of wax significantly improves this effect. For example, flash silver formulations are sensitive to human sweat over time, leading to loss of gloss and persistent fingerprints; adding a small amount of wax powder through post-blending can mitigate these issues.
Wax powder plays an increasingly diverse role in powder coatings, influencing rheological properties such as degassing, enhancing leveling and matting capabilities, and modifying surface states. Currently, customers have growing demands for waxes in powder coatings, with increasing focus on multi-functional wax combinations.
