Application of Wax Emulsion in Coatings
As people's awareness of environmental protection increases, water-based environmentally friendly materials are gradually replacing oil-based solvents in many fields, becoming an industry development trend. As an indispensable product in water-based coatings, water-based wax emulsion is widely used in water-based coating materials due to its unique properties and functions.
1. Changing coating surface properties, protecting the coating, adjusting gloss and other functions: The role of wax in most water-based surface coating formulations is to change the coating surface properties, such as improving coating smoothness or anti-slip, abrasion resistance, anti-adhesion, changing gloss, water repellency, rust prevention, etc. In use, wax particles need to occupy the coating surface during the coating drying process to form an isolation layer, thereby playing a protective role.
2. In some fields, wax emulsion is used as a special coating resin: Wax emulsion, especially microemulsion, has certain film-forming properties and can form a coating on the substrate. Due to wax's excellent hardness, polishability, feel, hydrophobicity, good chemical stability and non-toxicity, coatings based on wax emulsion are often used in the fields of glazing agents, water repellents and rust-proof coatings.

3. Isolation and adhesion: Wax is generally considered to have good anti-adhesion and isolation properties, so it is often used as a release agent and isolation agent in papermaking, rubber and plastic processing, metal die-casting and other fields, among which polyethylene wax emulsion is widely used. Interestingly, in the water-based sealing adhesive products for bonding paper products with PE and PP films, some formulations use polyethylene wax emulsion compounded with rosin and VAE emulsion, and good results have been achieved. Polyethylene wax emulsion mainly plays the role of increasing the adhesion with PE and PP films in the formula.
Water-based wax emulsion products will be used more and more widely with the deepening of the environmental protection campaign.
