Textile Auxiliaries - Softeners

    In the dyeing, finishing, and use of fabrics, in addition to antistatic finishing, softener finishing is also required to give fabrics a smooth and soft hand feel and improve product quality.

    The structure of softeners and their adsorption and action processes on fibers have many similarities with antistatic agents. In the textile industry, softeners are used in resin finishing agents to overcome the drawback of rough and hard hand feel of resin-finished fabrics; in high-speed sewing processes, they can reduce damage to needles and threads that would otherwise affect strength.

    The basic property of soft finishing agents is to impart smoothness and softness to fabrics, that is, to adjust the dynamic and static friction coefficients between fibers. For the smoothing effect, while reducing both dynamic and static friction coefficients between fibers, more emphasis is placed on reducing the dynamic friction coefficient. When using softeners, generally, the smaller the static friction coefficient, the better the soft touch.

    Wax emulsions used in the textile industry mainly play the following four roles:

• Waterproofing of textile substrates

• Changing the friction properties of fibers, yarns, and sewing threads to enhance processability

• Improving the performance of finishing agents such as softeners, silicones, and resins

• Providing superior fabric properties, such as increased bending and abrasion resistance, tear resistance, strength, and sewability
